If Christians Were Treated Like Muslims

Few Americans would deny that Judeo-Christian beliefs and values informed the Founding of this country and that they continue to shape much of American life today. Nor would many of us deny that Americans who embrace Islamic values are a distinct minority here.

I raise these two facts because of an emerging reality: that, in a variety of contexts, American Muslims are treated better than American Christians. That might seem like a bizarre assertion, so think about it in another way: What if the Christians were treated like Muslims in America, and Muslims like Christians?

If Muslims were treated like Christians in America, Muslims would have to tolerate the defamation of their holiest images in our national museums, acts which would be called "artwork" -- and, if particularly provocative, even given taxpayer-funded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. They would also have to accept Korans being burned and thrown into toilets, which instead of inciting worldwide outrage and retribution would provoke a collective shrug of the shoulders.

If Muslims were treated like Christians, Muslims would be mocked by late night TV talk show hosts and lampooned in crude cartoon parodies. If Christians were treated like Muslims, conspicuous Christianity would be celebrated by our elites as a sign of our diversity and open-mindedness, not disparaged as an embarrassment, a nuisance and a breach of the law.

If Christianity were treated like Islam, our students would be taught a white-washed version of Christian history, with the troubling bits miscast or omitted from textbooks and lesson plans.

If Christianity were treated like Islam, if an evangelical Christian committed an evil act in the name of his faith, he would be portrayed in the media as a deviation from, not a personification of, the Gospel message. Meanwhile, our political and media elites would hasten to assure the public that evangelical Christianity is a religion of peace and that the vast majority of evangelical Christians do not support terrorism.

If Christianity were treated like Islam in America, our president, a professed Christian, would proudly attend Christian-themed dinners and events while skipping Ramadan dinners, not vice versa. And Muslim politicians would go out of their way to assure people that their faith would not affect their policy-making.

If Christianity were treated like Islam, Christmas and Easter would be publicly celebrated for what they are — the signature events of Christianity, marking the birth and the death and Resurrection of Christ — not stripped of all their theological meaning and transformed into secular holidays devoted to crass consumerism.

If Christians were treated like Muslims, NASA would be tasked with reaching out to Christians and recognizing their faith's profound achievements and contributions to science, math and engineering, instead of being told to make Muslims feel good about their rather meager scientific accomplishments.

If Christians were treated like Muslims, the Catholic Church's stances on sex, contraception and human life would be revered as welcome departures from our over-sexed, self-obsessed culture, not condemned as a cause of disease and death in the less-developed world. And if Muslims were treated like Christians, the application of Sharia law around the world would be met not with stony silence but with the outrage it deserves.

If Christians were treated like Muslims in America, amusement parks would celebrate "Christian Family Day," (Six Flags recently celebrated "Muslim Family Day"), and Christians would be asked to embrace, not set aside, their religious convictions at the door when they entered the public square. Meanwhile, Muslim imams, not Christian pastors, would fear hate crimes lawsuits for preaching orthodox views of sexuality and sin.

The notion that American Muslims face discrimination, even to the point of violence, is often posited by America's elites. But that idea evaporates under scrutiny. Remarkably few hate crimes are reported against Muslims (fewer than one-eighth those against Jews). What's more, Muslim immigration to America has risen sharply since September 11, 2001, and Muslims thrive, economically and educationally, once they arrive.

In fact, it is Christians, not Muslims, who increasingly encounter cultural elites who are hostile to their beliefs and values.

Sadly, Christians will never be treated like Muslims by America's elites. Why? Because Christianity can be attacked without fear of retribution. The Christian response to insult and attack -- "to turn the other cheek" -- contradicts the knee-jerk call to violence of many Islamists.

It's also because left-wing elites and radical Islamists are united in the common cause of upending the Judeo-Christian culture and roots of American society.

I’m not in favor of burning the Koran, and I don’t think insulting or defaming symbols of any religion constitutes art. At a time of the year when intolerance for public displays of Christianity is most acute, it is my Christmas wish that Muslims and Christians would be treated equally.

Hurt Puppy

Yesterday, L gave Gabs a half a treat while she was in the puppy
enclosure. The brindle girl got too close & momma attacked her. Gabby
has some serious food issues, but only when it comes to the bebbehs.

I took the little one to the vet & came home with antibiotics & pain
killers. She doesn't like either of them!

This morning, I went in to give her her meds & this is what I found...

She's at the top of the picture, surrounded by her brothers & sister. I guess love helps the pain, too.

She is eating & nursing with the rest of them, just not playing as hard.

So Sandy's been commenting on my brother's tribute, wondering when I'm going to blog again... GAH!

Z & I went to the mall today & in one of the kiosks there was this very cool purse called the Miche Bag. You buy either a black or brown bag, then you change the outside with the different shells. You could have a different purse every day of the week, WITHOUT having to change purses! You can even change the length of the straps using the caribiner clips. The shells stay on using magnets, so it's easy to change.

I was impressed with this bag, there aren't many pockets, but it'll hold my Treo and some other things.

Next week is our Sales Conference. I am so tired of hearing the words "Sales Conference".... UGH! It's going to be a great time & the managers that are coming from across the country are going to have a blast. I hope that it all comes together like we are expecting it to!

So, yeah, pray for me next week. It's going to be a week of early mornings & late nights.

Friday night (9/26), Z & I went to see Hank Hough & his Amazing Dog. Wow! What an obedient dog. I almost think that Z thinks he's outgrown things like that. He loved the dog, but the message that was given failed to impress him. Personally, I thought it was a great show all around.

So, that's what I've been up to. Seems to be same ol' same ol', what can I say?

My baby brother is 35!

Today is my baby brother's birthday. J was born 35 years ago today & I can remember that day with clarity. I was 7, well not quite. See, my birthday is tomorrow, so I was *THIS* close to being 7. He sure stole my thunder for my 7th birthday. :D

I remember being in the hospital with daddy & P, the middle child. We celebrated my birthday in the waiting room. I remember for my birthday I got a red plaid baby buggy. My grandma made my birthday cake. I didn't like the cake, it was pink with confetti. I really wanted chocolate. Mother is fond of reminding me that *I* was the only grandchild she ever baked a cake for!

My best gift that day was the baby brother that stole my thunder. I am super blessed to have 2 such AWESOME brothers. I love them bananas & we are all good friends as well as siblings.

Anyway, this is just a small tribute to my baby brother's 35th birthday... you only have 15 to go!

Chrissy's husband, David, rented out the skating rink for her birthday & some of her closest friends showed up to skate & celebrate with her. There was sort of a 70s/80s theme, but we were told it wasn't mandatory to dress up.

Some, however, took the whole idea seriously :D

Z was the fastest there, breezing by the adults like they were standing still... until Becca showed up. We found out that she was on the speed skating team at this rink when she was a kid. They had a friendly competition, but I have to say that Becca won because she can do more than just go fast. We're going to try to get together this summer & skate!

It was a very fun party... & Chrissy, I hope you have a GREAT year!!

Donny Most

Today at work, we had a special visitor! Donny Most came to visit us at Hastings. He signed autographs & took pictures. He was there to promote the movie, Moola, that he's directing.

If you don’t remember or know who Donny Most is, you may be more familiar with his alter ego “Ralph Malph” from the sitcom “Happy Days.” He was the red-headed prankster whose dad was an optometrist. I have very fond memories of watching “Happy Days” with my family. Television sure isn’t what it used to be.

Babies are 5 weeks old...

So the babies are 5 weeks old yesterday. M & A came over to get some puppy love & try to decide which girl they want. It's so difficult since they just worm their way into your heart with one little look from their wall-eyes!

Here it's Dinner Time! The babies have been on puppy food for about 2 weeks now, not exclusively, but at least mom is getting some rest.

This little girl was attacked by momma for getting into momma's food. I mix canned puppy food in with momma's dry to give her a little extra protein & fat for nursing. Gabby wasn't too keen on having to share that treat with ANYONE!

Poor baby's eye was swollen shut & her whole head was swollen. We took her to the vet & he put her on antibiotics & painkillers. She seems to have come through the ordeal with little more than a few teeth marks on her head... thus "Scar"lett (as M christened her). She still crawls in momma's food & Gabby has gotten after her one other time, but not to the extent to leave teeth marks!

Needless to say, momma doesn't get to eat with the babies anymore.

This is the only boy in our litter of three. He's a fiesty little mongrel, too! He'll chew on any part of your body that is exposed. I've kicked him off my ankles more times than I care to mention. And those pointy, sharp little puppy teeth are like needles!

This little girl is sweet & laid back, although she also has sharp, pointy needle teeth! OUCH! She's the first into the crate at night & the last out in the morning.

Father-in-Law

We found out yesterday that my FIL had been experiencing leg pain for a couple of days (on top of his double hernia), so he went to the doc at the VA & was told that he had a blockage in his right leg. The doc wasn't sure what the blockage was, so my FIL had an MRI(?) done at one of our local private hospitals. It was determined that the blockage was serious enough to require surgery, so he was flown to the University Medical Center in Lubbock.

To try to avoid surgery, he was started on a drip of the medical equivalent of Liquid Plumber. He was on that drip all last night & this morning. The doc determined that it was working, so he decided to keep it going for a few more hours & see how it worked out. FIL actually had warmth in his foot after a few hours of this treatment. If required, doc will go in & "rotor rooter" his artery to make sure the blockage is completely gone. I believe the last word was that FIL would then have a stint put in to try to alleviate any future occurrences.

He should be able to come home in a couple of days... without having surgery! Thank you for your prayers.

Gabby went into full-blown labor this evening & started dropping puppies! I'll post pics when she's done & after we make a trip to the vet to make sure everything is okay. Stay tuned....

Well, she's done. She had 6 total... unfortunately, we lost 3 :(.

The three are brindle like their dad, Tyrone & they seem to be nursing okay. Gabby is tired, but I think she'll be a good mommy.

Now we need to make a trip to the vet for checkups & tail docking. We're gonna try to get in tomorrow, but it may be Friday. Pictures will come after (if Gabs will let me get close enough to take them :D)

14 year-old boys

Boy, it's fun having a 14 year old in the house. One minute we are having a great time making each other laugh & the next he's hacked off about something & it's my fault (even if it isn't). GAH!

So, Z started school.... 8th grade. He had a really good year last year & this is his second year at this school, so I hope it goes as well this year. After this year, he starts at the high school, so that will be a big change for him. He did make the tennis team, YEA! I know we watch a lot of tennis this time of year on tv!

I found out this week that he has a girlfriend. They've been passing notes back and forth and she seems to like him as much as he likes her... ahhh, young ~~love~~ ... like, is more like it. We'll probably be taking her to the movies with us in the near future. Her dad is pretty strict, which is a good thing, so we'll need to meet him and her mom before we plan anything.

And she's blonde...

Lost Friends

I've been thinking lately about friends that I used to have. During the time we were friends we were as close as we could get, but time & circumstances change. I do believe that friends are placed in our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime.

A few friends I remember:

Chellie Wantiez: she was my best buddy at Maranatha when I was in high school. I remember the last time I saw her was at Sr High camp, she could only stay for a couple of days instead of the entire week & I cried my eyes out when she had to leave. We traded addresses & phone numbers, but you know how things go, especially when one of you lives in KS and the other in IL.

Kim Schmidt: my best friend in college. I remember sitting in Theology class giving hand massages because of taking all those notes; nights sitting up late talking girl talk; cheap double dates to Albertson's & singing all of the commercials we could remember; doing the polka around the park...

Erica Teasley: she was my lifeline in boot camp. We had issues with another girl who was from NY & then had issues with the company commanders. After boot camp, we both went to different schools ... time & circumstances at work again. I hope you are well, Erica.

I don't have any close female friends like I used to. I've tried, but one-sided relationships are very emotionally draining.

Larry is my very best friend & I love him.

Zachary's Car

We found a car for Zach, although he won't be able to drive it for another couple of years (that's a good thing, as you'll see). It's a Ford Thunderbird.

Unfortunately, it needs a little work...
We'll need to get a headlight, a radiator & battery. We'll also have to straighten out the hood so it latches properly.

The inside is in good shape & I think it will be a good first car for Z! Besides, Kevin said it got 31 miles to the gallon.

Chevy vs Kia

Who do you suppose won? Absolutely the CHEVY! Larry couldn't stand driving a wuss-mobile any longer, so he traded in the KIA for an extended cab Chevy pickup. This truck is ROCKIN'!

It looks like it belonged to a teenager who initally had money, so he tricked it out with an aftermarket stereo and an awesome paint job among other things. We found the stereo cable in the back seat that must have been plugged into a Kicker speaker box or something! Then he ran out of money for gas or something & his dad made him sell it, or trade it for something more economical :D. I don't know if that's the story, but it sounds good!!

Of course, between the time Larry & I test drove the thing yesterday & signed papers for it this morning, someone dinged the bumper. So we'll have to get that fixed. L will have to modify the bumper anyway to install a hitch to pull his RACING MOWER (which he's now going to have to paint to match his truck!)

Okay, so Josiah we KNOW you'll like this truck..... wanna know why? IT'S ORANGE! (Even the dash....)

Larry is finishing up the trim, hopefully today. We're using quarter-round that we've stained & it looks good. He's doing an AWESOME job on this! For never having worked with laminate flooring (at all) or wood (much), he's rockin' this job!!

Today is my birthday... It's either the 12th anniversary of my 29th birthday or the 2nd anniversary of my 39th birthday. Since I have a "red-headed" step-daughter who just turned 20 this year, I'm thinkin' 29 is getting less believable. My family would say that I'm only 9 years from 50 this year... thanks guys!

We stopped at the store yesterday & picked up some steaks to grill (much cheaper than eating out), but I think we're going to go to Applebee's & have some of their Molten Chocolate Cake (for me) & Sizzlin' Apple Pie (for Larry) to finish off the day.

Lawn Mower Races

Larry came in first yesterday at the lawn mower races at the Caprock Roundup in Claude, TX . He did about 15 donuts on his mower before he got too dizzy to continue! Yea Larry! Then for the feature race, he broke 3rd gear, so he came in 2nd....

Home Improvement Projects

Today we started our home improvement project of laying laminate down where there is carpet in our house. With Larry's allergies & having 4 inside dogs, we thought this was a good idea to help keep the allergens down & clean up dog hair.

We found out today that the laminate we initally purchased from Sutherlands is being discontinued at their store, so we need to make sure we have enough to do all the rooms we need to do. We've decided not to do Zach's room yet, because in the winter, it's already cold in his room. If we took out the carpet, we're afraid it would become an icebox!

We've moved our bedroom to the living room! Since Zach's in CA until school starts, this shouldn't be an issue. Just don't call us to say you're coming to visit!

Our living room has been moved into the kitchen, so I guess, if you DO come, you'll need to stay at a hotel & we'll have to eat out every meal :D

Dog Fights

I don't know what's up with our female boxers, Kira & her daughter Gabby. I was almost in bed last night when Gabby picked a fight with her momma.

She's was more aggressive than usual & Kira came away bloody & sore.

I don't know if it's because Gabby is going into heat or what, but she's the only girl we have that hasn't been spayed. We're hoping to get some puppies from her & Tyrone.

I hate it when they fight. Larry says that if they continue, Gabs is going to be an outside dog :(. Kira is his baby. I got her for him for his birthday 6 years ago.

Kira is THE best dog. We can leave the front door open & she'll stay within the boundaries of the 5 acres, she doesn't chase cars, she'll only go see the horses across the street if I'm with her & most important, she comes when we call her.

I don't know what to do aside from keeping one or the other locked in her crate.

Poor Tyrone doesn't know what to do when they fight. He wants to get in on the action, but he's such a chicken that if I raise my voice, he's afraid he's in trouble, so he high-tails it outside. He knows that that's where they'll be sent when I'm done with my rant anyway!

So far tonight, it's been quiet... we'll see how it goes.

Well, how easy is that? I sent a message to go@blogspot.com & now I'm able to blog from my phone. Great ... one more thing to distract me from life!

So, my son has been in CA for a week; 1 down, 6 more to go. I'm sure he's having a great time, but I'll never know unless I call him, 'cuz he certainly won't call me.... mom who? Guess I'll have to disrupt his visit with a phone call to "check up on him." He hates it when I do that!! :D

I should really be in bed, I have to be up early tomorrow. I worked all weekend on a presentation for the team to take to Vegas in two weeks ... I'm only about 1/2 done with the graphs, so I'm sure that's what I'll be working on tomorrow.

Alright ... I'm going to bed. G'nite!
